On Tuesday, 14 July, law enforcement officers arrived on 13 January Street in the capital's city centre, where a security guard had apprehended a man. This individual had attempted to remove alcohol and food products from a shop without making payment. During the detention, he behaved aggressively and threatened the guard with a tear gas weapon.

As Jauns.lv reports, citing State Police spokesperson Gita Gžibovska, the guard had held the thief at the scene of the incident. Video circulating online shows that the dispute took place on the roadway, and passing drivers were forced to brake sharply or change course to avoid a collision.

Following the incident, the violent man was immediately handed over to police and placed in a detention facility. Two criminal cases have been opened in connection with this incident — one for petty theft and the other for resisting a representative of the authorities.

The investigation continues to establish all circumstances.
