Armed kidnappers in Riga detained; prosecutors begin criminal proceedings against 11 people

As reported by jauns.lv, on 25 March this year, four armed gang members arrived at a man's residence in Riga's city centre, forcibly placed him in a car and took him from the scene. At the same time, two other accomplices drove away a vehicle belonging to the victim.

Officers from the Criminal Police of the State Police Riga Regional Directorate immediately launched a detention operation. During it, the victim was freed and all four attackers were detained. Later, police detained three more gang members. The investigation established that several gang members are already in custody serving sentences for previously committed crimes.

Evidence obtained during searches revealed additional criminal offences. Gang members are being held on suspicion of making threats, intentional arson of a vehicle, as well as unauthorised acquisition and storage of narcotic substances in large quantities. In addition, unauthorised storage of communications devices and their components in a place of detention was established.

Police emphasised that the gang was armed — its members had firearms and ammunition at their disposal. One member also had forged identity documents confiscated.

The State Police combined criminal cases previously initiated into one case, which on 8 October was referred to the prosecutor's office to initiate criminal proceedings against 11 people. Five of them are currently subject to a security measure — detention. For the purposes of the investigation, police are not providing detailed information about the circumstances and motives of the crimes at this time.
