Theft on bus: Riga police detain two pickpockets
According to 1188.lv, on 29 September a pickpocketing incident occurred on Riga public transport — a passenger's wallet containing €104 in cash was snatched from a handbag.
The incident took place on bus route 22, which runs from Riga Airport to the city centre. The bus was in motion when a man and a woman boarded. Both attracted the attention of a passenger who was sitting with a handbag on her shoulder.
One of the suspects bumped into the woman to distract her attention, whilst the other removed a wallet containing cash from the handbag. At the next stop, both got off the bus, removed all the cash from the wallet and threw the wallet itself into a waste bin.
The thieves' actions were observed by State Police officers from the Riga region. Police officers followed the suspects and soon detained them, also recovering the stolen money.
The detained woman was born in 1954, the man in 1974. Police note that the man has previously been convicted of pickpocketing.
A criminal case has been initiated at the Riga Pārdaugava police department for theft of a small amount. The Criminal Law provides for this offence penalties of imprisonment for up to one year, short-term imprisonment, probation supervision, community work or a monetary fine. Both individuals have been placed under police supervision during the investigation.
The State Police remind that no one is considered guilty until guilt is proven in the manner provided by law.
