Specialised unit tracks down and arrests pickpockets on bus 22
According to apollo.lv, on 29 September this year, a man and woman boarded bus No. 22, which was travelling from the airport to Riga city centre, with the intent to rob passengers. The tactic was calculated: the woman pressed herself against a seated passenger to distract attention, whilst her accomplice pulled a wallet from a handbag.
After exiting at the next stop, the two removed all the cash from the wallet – 104 euros – and threw the wallet into a waste bin.
However, the thieves' actions were observed by law enforcement officers from the 2nd section of the 2nd bureau of the Criminal Police Department of the Riga Region Directorate of the State Police, who specialise precisely in the detection of pickpocketing. The officers tracked down the suspected individuals, arrested both, and recovered the stolen money – before the victim had even noticed that she had been robbed.
The arrested woman was born in 1954. Her suspected accomplice – born in 1974 – has previously been convicted of pickpocketing.
A criminal case has been initiated at the Riga Pārdaugava District Police with respect to Article 180 of the Criminal Law on theft of a minor nature. The law provides for such an offence imprisonment of up to one year, short-term imprisonment, probation supervision, community service or a fine. During the investigation, both suspected individuals have been placed under police supervision.
The State Police reminds the public: no person is considered guilty until their guilt has been proven in the manner prescribed by law.
