This week, eight people who had entered the country illegally were detained in Birzgale parish, Ogre district, located in central Latvia — far from the state border. This is the first such incident in this territory.
The incident was reported by Latvian Television on 27 May. The detention took place in a forested area, indicating that illegal immigration is no longer merely a border problem but is affecting Latvia's interior regions as well.
Law enforcement authorities are continuing their investigation to determine how the detained individuals travelled so far from the border and whether an organised network of smugglers exists that facilitates the movement of illegal migrants across the country's territory.
