Google News LV — Crime (lv) reports that on 20 August, officers from the Vidzeme Regional Department's South Vidzeme District of the State Police received information about a suspected drink-driver in Cēsis. Officers noticed the vehicle, an "Audi," near a shopping centre and decided to stop it for inspection.
Upon activating the service vehicle's lights and sirens, police signalled the driver to stop, but the Audi driver did not comply with the instructions and began to flee. During the flight, he crossed an intersection against a red traffic light and reached 132 km/h in a zone where the permitted speed is 50 km/h. The driver also ignored the requirements of road sign No. 207 "Stopping and continuing is prohibited," endangering both his own safety and that of other road users.
Continuing the flight, the Audi entered a private courtyard and was left at the edge of a pond. The driver and passenger abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but officers managed to stop and detain both of them.
One of the men was visibly under the influence of alcohol and narcotic substances. Despite being warned of criminal liability, he refused to have his breath alcohol concentration measured. During an inspection of the vehicle's interior, officers found a packet containing a greenish-brown substance of unknown origin that resembled cannabis. The seized substance was submitted for expert examination.
The State Police have initiated a criminal case in accordance with section 1 of Article 259 and section 1 of Article 262.1 of the Criminal Law. In total, five administrative violation cases have been initiated for various violations.
The State Police remind that no person is to be considered guilty until their guilt for a criminal act has been proven in the manner prescribed by law.
