As reported by TVNET, the Supreme Court has delivered a ruling in a criminal case that began with a rather unusual incident in 2017 — Latvia's most well-known drug smuggler Rolands Prīverts presented a package of tree leaf tea brought from Bolivia to a customs investigator.
The incident occurred when Prīverts arrived for questioning at the Customs Police in connection with another cocaine smuggling case. Choosing to mark Police Officers' Day with irony, he presented the investigator with a package of tea as a "gift". The investigator declined to accept the gift — it was confiscated and a new criminal case was initiated against Prīverts for drug trafficking.
The name Prīverts first resonated widely in Latvia's public sphere in 1999, when he was detained at Riga Airport together with a former model and beauty pageant contestant. Nearly two kilograms of cocaine were found in their luggage.
This incident marked the beginning of a lengthy and publicly monitored career in drug smuggling. In subsequent years, media regularly reported on his arrests in various countries, including Finland and Ecuador.
