An Audi driver in Cēsis fled from police on 20 August, reaching 132 km/h in an area with a 50 km/h speed limit. A substance resembling cannabis was found in the vehicle; a criminal investigation has been initiated.

As reported by Apollo, on 20 August, officials from the South Vidzeme division of the State Police Vidzeme regional directorate received information that an Audi driver in Cēsis was possibly driving under the influence of alcohol.
The law enforcement officers spotted the vehicle near a shopping centre and activated the service vehicle's lights and sirens, calling on the driver to stop. The driver did not comply with police instructions and began to flee.
During the flight, the driver repeatedly violated traffic regulations, endangering both his own safety and that of other road users. He crossed an intersection when the traffic light displayed a prohibition signal, and ignored the requirements of road sign No. 207 "Continuing without stopping is prohibited". In a location where the permitted driving speed is 50 km/h, the vehicle reached 132 km/h.
While fleeing, the Audi driver drove into a private house courtyard and left the vehicle by the edge of a pond. Both the driver and a passenger attempted to flee on foot, but law enforcement officers stopped and detained both.
One of the men was noticeably under the influence of alcohol and narcotic substances. The person was warned of criminal liability in case of refusal to measure alcohol concentration in exhaled breath — however, the man refused the breathalyser test.
Upon inspection of the vehicle's interior, law enforcement officers found a bag containing a substance of greenish-brown colour, of unknown origin, resembling cannabis. The seized substance was sent for expert examination.
The State Police initiated a criminal investigation in accordance with Part 1 of Section 259 and Part 1 of Section 262.1 of the Criminal Law, as well as a total of five administrative violation proceedings for various traffic violations.
The State Police reminds that no person shall be considered guilty unless their guilt has been proven in the manner prescribed by law.
