Man sets house on fire after relationship dispute in Daugavpils

In Daugavpils, in a cottage village, a man set fire to a residential house where his girlfriend lived following a conflict with a woman. The State Police are currently investigating the incident as a suspected case of arson.

The events unfolded late in the evening. A middle-aged couple argued at home about their separation. During the conflict, the man became aggressive and tried to prevent the woman from leaving. Soon her relatives arrived — her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, who restrained the man and led the woman out of the house.

The man then called the police, claiming that he had been beaten. Law enforcement officers arrived, spoke with him and drove away. According to the accounts of neighbours, the man then found a fuel canister and poured its contents around the building. "He drove away without even closing the gates," witnesses said.

Those nearby noticed flames and called the firefighters. The fire covered an area of 60 square metres, and the flames were extinguished mostly during the night. Rescuers had to bring in additional resources because water had to be transported to the site, which complicated the work. Due to the dense housing development, there was a risk that the fire would spread to neighbouring buildings, but this was prevented.

The two-storey brick house was completely filled with smoke, and burnt objects were visible in the yard. The house belonged to the woman, and the man had moved in with her a few years ago. Neighbours say the couple lived peacefully at first, but the homeowner has had a difficult time recently — three months ago her son died in Germany, and a month ago the woman was in a car accident.

Police confirm that the incident was most likely arson, but have not disclosed details or information about the suspect. The investigation is continuing. According to what neighbours said, the suspected perpetrator is currently free and avoiding contact with law enforcement.
