On 1 July, officers from Riga's Pārdaugava precinct detained two men on suspicion of drug trafficking. The incident occurred in the Āgenskalna area. Information is provided by the State Police website.

The detained men are two individuals — one born in 1983, the other in 1976. During searches conducted by law enforcement officers, a substance containing amphetamine was found at the younger detainee, whilst more than 50 grammes of cocaine-containing substance and other illegal drugs were found at the other, the composition of which is currently being determined by expert examination.

The court has imposed a security measure on the older of the detainees — detention in custody. The younger man was already subject to a search warrant in connection with another case, in which detention in custody had also been ordered. Both have had previous legal problems related to drugs.

A criminal case has been initiated under Article 253.1, first part, of the Criminal Law — for the manufacture, acquisition, storage, transportation or transmission of prohibited substances for the purpose of sale, or for their unlawful sale. Such an offence may result in a custodial sentence of between two and eight years, confiscation of property or without such confiscation, as well as probation supervision for up to three years.
