Hooliganism in Jūrmala café: two men detained, one remanded in custody
In late May in Jūrmala, two men were detained for hooliganism in a café. One has been remanded in custody following threats made to police officers.
Conflict erupts in Jūrmala café — police seek witnesses
According to Nra.lv, on 29 May 2026 at approximately 18:30, the State Police received a report from residents about hooliganism at a catering establishment in Jūrmala.
Two men — born in 1988 and 1986 — behaved aggressively, quarrelled and used physical force against other café customers, and also disrupted the establishment's operations. Upon arriving at the scene, police officers established that both men were noticeably intoxicated and failed to comply with lawful requirements. One of them made threats to police officers — threatening to take away their service firearms.
Both men were detained. A criminal case has been initiated under Article 231, Part 2 of the Criminal Law — for hooliganism committed by a group of persons or associated with resistance to a representative of the authorities. The law provides for this criminal offence a sentence of imprisonment for up to five years, short-term imprisonment, probation supervision, community service or a monetary fine.
Following assessment of the materials obtained in the criminal proceedings, both men have been designated as suspects. One of them has been subject to a security measure — remand in custody. The State Police notes that the remanded man has repeatedly come to the attention of police; most recently he was convicted of theft, fraud or embezzlement of a minor amount, as well as refusal to submit to a breathalyser or blood test as a vehicle driver.
The State Police is calling on anyone who witnessed the conflict that took place in the café to contact them by telephone on 67075147, 67075164 or 112.
The State Police reminds that no person is considered guilty until their guilt for a criminal offence has been proven in the manner prescribed by law.
Another case of violence has been registered in Jūrmala during this period: during the Resort Festival last weekend, a mass brawl broke out on the street, as a result of which one man sustained injuries, and the attacker has been charged with hooliganism.
