Three employees of the State Police Riga Regional Office could face criminal liability for exceeding official powers. The Internal Security Bureau (IDB) has handed over the case to the prosecutor's office to initiate prosecution, according to pmo.ee.

During the investigation, it was revealed that these law enforcement officers, whilst carrying out their direct duties, applied physical force against a detained person on several occasions which had no justification and exceeded the necessary limits. In addition, they used an electroshock device despite there being no lawful grounds for doing so.

Currently, all three suspects have been prohibited from holding certain positions. They have also been banned from leaving the country.

The IDB has previously examined a similar case. News agency LETA reported that the bureau had filed a recommendation for charges against another State Police employee who, in two separate incidents, used an electroshock device against detained persons without warning and without any legal basis.
