On Sunday, 31 May, at approximately 13:00, State Police officers of the South Zemgale district in the Zemgale region detected a motorcycle on road A7 at the 65-kilometre mark travelling at 126 km/h — in excess of the permitted 70 km/h. According to jauns.lv, the vehicle registration plate symbols were obscured with a sticker.
Police officers immediately activated flashing lights and a siren and turned their service vehicle to intercept, but the motorcycle driver had already increased speed and begun to flee. The Iecava team of Bauska municipality police was also informed of the incident.
Upon entering Iecava, the municipal police team attempted to block the road intersection between highway A7 and road P93 with a staggered service car, but the blockade was unsuccessful. The man continued his escape down Riga Street, creating several dangerous situations and violating road traffic regulations.
State Police officers repeatedly demanded in Latvian and English that the vehicle be stopped, but the motorcyclist did not respond and continued to accelerate. The pursuit continued along highway A7 in the direction of Riga to Ķekava municipality, Ķekava parish, where the motorcyclist performed a sharp braking manoeuvre without assessing traffic intensity. After the motorcycle was stopped, police detained the man — an Estonian citizen.
Six administrative violation proceedings were initiated against the man: for exceeding the speed limit, for driving with an obscured registration plate, and for aggressive driving — multiple lane changes, overtaking in the opposite lane, and speed limit violations. The total fine imposed amounts to €6,700, with the additional provision of withdrawing driving rights for three years.
At the same time, a criminal case was initiated against the Estonian citizen for violating road traffic regulations in the form of aggressive driving after repeated demands from a competent official to stop the vehicle. According to the Criminal Law, such a violation carries a penalty of deprivation of liberty for a period of up to two years or short-term deprivation of liberty, probation supervision, community service, or a monetary fine, as well as withdrawal of driving rights for a period of up to five years. The final sentence will be determined by the court.
