Young men detained for storing and selling 30 kilograms of marijuana in Riga
Investigators in Riga have detained several men accused of large-scale illegal marijuana circulation. During searches, approximately 30 kilogrammes of banned substances were seized, more than seven thousand euros in cash, as well as a digital safe, according to LETA.
The operation began at the start of this year, when a group engaged in drug sales was discovered in Riga's North district. The first two individuals involved – born in 2000 and 2001 – were detained on 8 January. Continuing the investigation, in June and July three more persons were apprehended: a man born in 1991, as well as two younger ones born in 2001 and 2002.
Most of those detained have managed to avoid detention in a holding facility – four were given security measures not involving deprivation of liberty. However, the oldest member of the group – born in 1991 – is in custody. One of the youngest members, born in 2002, was previously recorded by police in connection with illegal drug circulation.
The case has been initiated for illegal production, acquisition, accumulation, transportation and sale of narcotic substances committed by an organised group. This violation can carry a custodial sentence of between three and ten years.
