On Saturday, 23 May, at approximately 22:00 in Jelgava, two people were detained — an intoxicated car driver and her husband, who obstructed police work. According to TVNET, information about the incident was provided to the news agency LETA by the State Police (VP).
Officers from the Special Tasks Battalion of the VP, while patrolling Prokhorova Street, noticed a Volkswagen moving in an unsafe manner — with signs of sudden acceleration. Police believe that the driver, having noticed the service vehicle, attempted to evade police.
The officers switched on their lights and followed the car, which pulled over at a nearby bus stop. Upon approaching the vehicle, the driver stated that her documents were not with her. An alcohol test showed 1.28 per mille. It was also established that the car had not undergone a mandatory state technical inspection and did not have valid compulsory civil liability insurance in force.
While the officers were working at the scene, the woman's husband arrived — also under the influence of alcohol. He behaved provocatively, obstructed officials and, having received an instruction to leave the area, made threats and offered to fight. The man was warned several times about the consequences, and initially left.
However, shortly afterwards he returned, continuing his aggressive behaviour and openly refusing to comply with police requirements. While speaking on the telephone with someone, he threatened that someone else would come and "throw the police officers on the ground". When the officers decided to detain the man, he attempted to flee.
After being detained, the man was taken to a medical facility to determine his alcohol concentration, and subsequently to a sobering-up centre.
Four administrative violation proceedings were initiated against the woman: for driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, for failure to obtain compulsory insurance, for failure to carry out a technical inspection within the prescribed period, and for driving without the necessary documents.
Against the man, an administrative violation proceeding was commenced for non-compliance with the lawful requirements of an official and obstruction of police work, as well as for failure to declare a place of residence.
