The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) has submitted a request to the prosecutor's office to initiate criminal proceedings against former Rēzeknes city mayor Aleksandrs Bartaševičs. He is suspected of abuse of official position.
Suspicions arose regarding the implementation of the project "Creation of Rēzeknes recreation centre for tourism development". Investigators concluded that the former mayor allegedly unlawfully entered into a contract on behalf of the municipality with a construction company for the continuation of this facility.
KNAB believes that such actions were carried out in excess of authority and could have provided advantages to a specific company. This is the latest corruption scandal related to the misuse of municipal funds in large construction projects.
The prosecutor's office will make a decision on initiating criminal proceedings after evaluating the submitted materials.
