A 69-year-old Russian journalist Grigory Nehoroşev was found dead in Riga on 19 June. The Latvian State Police have opened a criminal investigation into a possible crime, although initial information currently does not provide grounds to assert that the death was a criminal act.
G. Nehoroşev was the first to publish information about Russian President Vladimir Putin's relations with gymnast Alina Kabaeva. In 2008, in the newspaper "Moskovskij Korrespondent" which he edited, an article appeared stating that V. Putin was planning to divorce his wife Liudmila and marry A. Kabaeva.
Over the past eleven years, the journalist lived in Latvia as a political refugee. Relatives indicated that he feared becoming the target of a hired assassin, possibly acting on V. Putin's orders.
The journalist's friend Igor Vatolyn, who met with him shortly before his death, noted that G. Nehoroşev felt well and was actively planning for the future. I. Vatolyn emphasised the journalist's role in publishing information about V. Putin's private life.
State police representatives confirmed to news agency LETA that a criminal investigation has been opened. For now, police refuse to provide additional comments as the investigation continues.
