Latvian law enforcement authorities have opened a criminal case into the death of 69-year-old Russian journalist Andrei Nykhorozhev, who was found dead in Riga.
Estonian media outlet Rus.Postimees, cited by the portal tvnet.lv, reports that the man died in Latvia's capital. Nykhorozhev headed the newspaper Moskovskij Korrespondent. This publication was the first to report in 2008 on Vladimir Putin's relationship with Alina Kabaeva.
More than a decade before his death, Nykhorozhev had left his homeland and lived in Latvia. His family members revealed that the journalist lived in fear — he was concerned that he could become the victim of an assassin hired by Putin's associates.
One of his relatives — Igor Vatolins — met the journalist very recently. According to him, Nykhorozhev felt well and had planned an active future.
Police representatives confirmed to news agency LETA that on 19 June a man's body was found. A criminal case has been opened, but there is currently no evidence suggesting that a crime has been committed.
Police are not providing further information at this time as the investigation continues.
