On 19 June, a 69-year-old Russian journalist, Grigory Nekhoroshev, was found dead in Riga. Latvian police have launched a criminal investigation, but acknowledge that the information currently available does not yet allow for assumptions about a crime.
The portal tvnet.lv, citing the Estonian media outlet "Rus.Postimees", reported that the journalist died after eating mushrooms he had picked up in a courtyard. G. Nekhoroshev was the first to publish information about the relationship between Russian leader Vladimir Putin and gymnast Alina Kabaeva. In 2008, an article appeared in the newspaper "Moskovskij Korrespondent", which he edited, stating that V. Putin was planning to divorce his wife Lyudmila and marry A. Kabaeva.
For the past 11 years, the journalist lived in Latvia as a political refugee. Relatives said that he was afraid of becoming the target of a hired killer. The journalist's friend Igor Vatolins, who met with him shortly before his death, indicated that G. Nekhoroshev felt well and was actively planning for the future.
Representatives of the State Police confirmed to news agency LETA that a criminal investigation has been opened, but declined to comment further as the investigation is ongoing.
