Latvian police have begun a criminal investigation into the death of Russian journalist Grigory Nekhoroshev, although current information does not yet allow conclusions to be drawn about a criminal offence.
The portal tvnet.lv, citing Estonian media "Rus.Postimees", reported that 69-year-old G. Nekhoroshev was found dead in Riga on 19 June. According to reports, he died after eating mushrooms he had picked up in a courtyard.
G. Nekhoroshev was editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Moskovskij Korrespondent". It was precisely in this publication that an article appeared in 2008 about Russian leader Vladimir Putin's alleged plans to divorce his wife Lyudmila and marry rhythmic gymnast Alina Kabaeva. The journalist was the first to publish information about V. Putin's relationship with A. Kabaeva.
For the past eleven years, G. Nekhoroshev lived in Latvia as a political refugee. His relatives claimed that the journalist feared becoming a target of an assassin, possibly acting on V. Putin's orders. The journalist's friend Igor Vatolins, who met with him shortly before his death, noted that G. Nekhoroshev felt well and was actively planning for the future.
State police representatives confirmed to news agency LETA that on 19 June a man's body was found and a criminal case was opened. The initial data so far do not allow conclusions to be drawn about a criminal offence. Police declined to provide additional comments, as the investigation is still ongoing.
