Riga Regional Court on 21 May sentenced a mother to one and a half years in prison after her underage daughter drowned in a private house pond in Ropažu Municipality in 2024.
The woman was found guilty not only of negligence that led to the child's death, but also of cruel treatment of a minor that caused physical suffering. The court established that the mother had not provided proper supervision, which was the direct cause of the accident.
The incident occurred on the territory of a private house, where the child fell into an unoccupied pond and drowned. During the investigation, it was established that the parents had not installed safety barriers or other protective measures.
The court ruling has not yet entered into legal force and may be appealed to a higher instance.
