Military Police to investigate woman's shooting in Rītabuļļi
In March in Riga, in the Rītabuļļi district, a woman sustained a gunshot wound to her back. The case was initially investigated by the State Police, but has now been handed over to the Military Police because the incident occurred near a military facility where exercises took place on 4 March.

In March in Riga, in the Rītabuļļi district, a woman sustained a gunshot wound to her back, and the case has now been taken over by the Military Police (MP), reports LETA.
Initially, the State Police (VP) opened a criminal investigation into the incident. The woman sought medical assistance, stating that she had been shot by an unknown person. Latvia's Television reported that doctors removed approximately two centimetres of a bullet from her back. The first visit to a medical facility took place at Pauls Stradiņš Hospital, where doctors did not operate on the patient as they assessed the situation as non-life-threatening.
The Health Inspectorate examined whether the doctors' decision to discharge the woman with the bullet remaining in her body was correct. The inspection concluded that medical staff had acted in accordance with professional standards.
The State Police have now handed over the criminal case to the National Armed Forces (NBS), which have forwarded it to the MP for investigation. The question of whether the shot could have come from a service weapon of the armed forces will be examined during the course of the investigation.
Representatives of the National Armed Forces stated that the victim sustained an injury near a military facility at Dzintara Street 63, where exercises took place on 4 March in the afternoon. At this address is located the Special Operations Command.
The armed forces stress that a thorough investigation is necessary because the exercises took place inside the facility, not outside its territory.
