Police have established that the reported attack in Ogre was fabricated to conceal an employee's earlier embezzlement of company funds.

On 7 June, law-enforcement authorities received a report of an assault on a young woman in Ogre, in the vicinity of Rīgas Street, near Vecupe Beach. It was initially reported that an unknown man had used physical force to take a bag from the victim, which contained €47 of her own money, as well as €5,810 in employer funds intended for deposit at a bank. This information prompted an investigation to be opened under the Criminal Law provision on robbery.
However, investigators quickly concluded that the incident was fabricated. The employee, born in 1996, had actually taken the company's money earlier. To avoid suspicion, she devised a robbery scenario. For this purpose, she recruited an acquaintance—a man born in 1991—who in turn enlisted a man born in 1999. The latter agreed to play the role of the attacker in exchange for two hundred euros.
Law-enforcement officials detained the youngest of the men on suspicion of robbery. As the investigation continued, the true nature of the false crime was uncovered. A pre-trial investigation is currently underway to establish each person's involvement and assess the extent of their responsibility. A decision on changing the case's qualification to another legal provision will be made in the near future.
Police warn that deliberately providing false reports of alleged crimes and staging them hampers the work of operational services, wastes state resources, and may affect the fate of the guilty party in court.
