Man appeals life sentence for killing mother and dog whilst under influence of drugs
The Riga Regional Court continued to hear an appeal case today against a man accused of murdering his mother and her pet whilst under the influence of narcotic substances.
The first instance court previously sentenced the man to life imprisonment. Additionally, moral compensation of 50,000 euros was recovered from the defendant in favour of the injured party's relatives.
According to data provided by the prosecution, the accused arrived at his mother's home on 13 May 2024 whilst in an intoxicated state. There he repeatedly struck the woman on the head and body with a heavy object. The man then began to strangle his mother, causing asphyxiation. Finally, he cut the woman's throat with a sharp object.
On the same occasion, the accused showed cruelty towards his mother's dog — after the woman's death, he inflicted fatal injuries on the animal with a sharp object.
The accused himself explained that the drugs had caused him hallucinations, which also served as the reason for these actions. However, the evidence obtained during the investigation indicates that the man was able to understand his actions and control them.
