Five police officials detained for accepting bribes from foreign drivers
The Internal Security Bureau detained five employees of the State Police General Order Police Administration Response Department in late August for accepting bribes whilst performing official duties, the bureau informed the portal tv3.lv.
The detained officials were employed in the sphere of transport supervision. The violations occurred whilst conducting traffic safety monitoring — the officials accepted bribes from foreign lorry drivers in exchange for failing to formalise the administrative violations committed in the manner prescribed by law.
During the investigation, the Internal Security Bureau found and seized money in various foreign currencies totalling several thousand euros.
All five individuals have been assigned the status of suspects. Three officials have been subject to non-custodial security measures, including prohibitions on certain activities. Two officials have been remanded in custody by the court.
As part of the pre-trial investigation, the possible involvement of the officials in document forgery in the sphere of transport supervision is being assessed. The criminal offence was discovered in cooperation with the State Police.
