Five State Police officers detained for bribery from lorry drivers
The Internal Security Bureau detained five State Police officers in late August who demanded bribes from foreign lorry drivers. Two have been remanded in custody, three have been prohibited from working.
Five State Police officers detained for accepting bribes from lorry drivers
The Internal Security Bureau (ISB) detained five State Police (SP) Response Department officials in late August who accepted bribes from foreign lorry drivers during transport supervision. They did not process the identified administrative violations they discovered, the ISB informed news agency LETA.
During investigative proceedings, the ISB found and seized money in various currencies—amounting to several thousand euros.
All five officials have been remanded in custody. Three of them have been subjected to non-custodial security measures, including a prohibition on performing their respective job duties. Two officials have been remanded in custody by court order.
According to information provided by Diena, pre-trial investigation is also examining the possible involvement of these SP officials in document forgery in the field of transport supervision. The criminal offence was uncovered in cooperation with the SP itself.
According to calculations by news agency LETA, a total of 24 SP officials have been detained this year for various crimes. For comparison—last year a total of nine SP officials were detained, one of whom was charged with corruption-related offences, and the year before—11 officials, also including one corruption case.
