In February, law enforcement officers arrested three men who jointly organised illegal trafficking of narcotic and psychotropic substances. The arrests took place on 13 February in forests near Riga, when the group used a hiding place to hand over a kilogramme of cocaine.

Investigators concluded that the trio had trafficked in cocaine, marijuana, amphetamine, mephedrone and ecstasy tablets, and they themselves manufactured amphetamine at their residence. In nine searches at addresses associated with the individuals, more than 25 kilograms of various prohibited substances were found and confiscated, along with other evidence.

The arrested men were born in 1997, 1995 and 1999, and have no previous convictions. The court set custodial sentence as a security measure for all three on 15 February.

The case was opened under a provision of the Criminal Law that provides for liability for manufacture, purchase, accumulation, transportation or sale of prohibited substances if carried out by an organised group or if the transaction was conducted on a large scale. The sentence can reach up to 15 years' imprisonment.
