Police detain three men for drug trafficking; significant quantities confiscated
Three men have been detained for illegal drug trafficking in Latvia. During operational activities, more than 25 kilograms of various narcotic and psychotropic substances were seized.

In February, law enforcement officers began investigating a case on suspicion that several individuals were involved in illegal drug trafficking. During the investigation, it emerged that three men had been operating as an organised group, engaged in the unlawful storage, sale and production of controlled substances.
The group trafficked in cocaine, marijuana, amphetamine, mephedrone and MDMA tablets. Furthermore, they themselves manufactured amphetamine at a residential location.
On 13 February, multiple police structures were involved in the operation: the Criminal Police 4th Bureau of the Riga Region, the Special Tasks Battalion, the counter-terrorism unit "Omega", as well as other units. The detention took place in forests near Riga immediately after one kilogram of cocaine was sold using a hiding place.
During nine search operations, law enforcement officers seized a significant quantity of narcotics and other items.
The detained individuals are men born in 1997, 1995 and 1999. All three have been remanded in custody as a precautionary measure. None of them had previously been convicted.
The case was initiated under Article 253.1, Part Three of the Criminal Law, which provides for liability for the unauthorised production, acquisition, storage, transportation or sale of narcotic or psychotropic substances, if committed by an organised group or on a large scale.
This violation is punishable by imprisonment of between five and fifteen years, confiscation of property, or probation supervision of up to three years.
