The State Police are continuing to investigate a cyberattack directed against the information systems of Latvia's state forests company. During the investigation, it was discovered that an unrelated person acted arbitrarily on behalf of the company and made contact with the attackers.

The State Police have conducted investigative measures in a case initiated on 26 June this year concerning a digital attack on the information systems of the state forestry company.
In investigating this matter, law enforcement authorities discovered that a person who had no connection whatsoever to the incident itself had acted arbitrarily on behalf of the state-owned company. This individual, without authorisation and without any official permission, contacted criminals in order to discuss the possibility of paying a sum of money for the recovery of stolen data.
No new criminal proceedings have been initiated against this person. Instead, he was given the status of a person against whom criminal proceedings have been initiated in the existing case. He was not arrested but instead voluntarily came to the police station to provide an explanation and cooperated with investigators. His place of residence was also searched, during which one electronic device was seized.
The police emphasise that they are investigating not this person's public statements about the cyberattack, but rather his unlawful conduct in taking actions on behalf of the company.
The case was initiated under Part 5 of Section 243 of the Criminal Law for deliberate interference with a state-importance data processing system. An additional charge was applied under Section 279 of the Criminal Law for arbitrary conduct that circumvented the procedure established in regulatory enactments.
