Police launch investigation into men who accosted woman in Riga city centre

The State Police have launched an investigation after a woman reported an unpleasant incident in Riga city centre, reports pmo.ee.

The woman described on the social media platform Twitter that, while heading home through the square near the University of Latvia, two men approached her, who appeared to be of South Asian origin. According to the victim's account, one of them attempted to touch her with his hands, while the other was prepared to expose his intimate area. The woman resisted until a passer-by rushed to her aid.

Law enforcement officials confirmed to the news agency LETA that they had received information about a possible violation, contacted the victim, went to see her and completed a report.

A criminal case has been initiated based on provisions of the Criminal Code that protect decency and sexual integrity.

An active investigation is currently under way, during which the police are gathering evidence to establish the identity of the suspected perpetrator. The police will provide additional information about this case as soon as it is possible.

Residents are urged to report any similar incidents or other possible violations of the law to the State Police without delay.
