Police in Latgale have completed an investigation into a case in which a 61-year-old man is suspected of striking a dog on the head with an object and kicking it at the end of June in Preiļu municipality, resulting in the animal's death.

Police in the Latgale region have closed the investigation and sent the criminal case to the prosecutor's office. The suspect is a man born in 1964. He is accused of inflicting severe bodily injuries on a dog last summer in Preiļu municipality, injuries that resulted in the animal's death.
On the evening of 26 June last year, a local resident reported a suspicious incident in Galēnu parish. The woman noticed a pool of blood in the stairwell of a house. A patrol from the Northern Latgale district was dispatched to the scene.
The investigation established that the suspect first struck the animal on the head with some object, then kicked it repeatedly on the body. The dog did not survive the injuries sustained. Subsequently, the man carried the animal's remains to a nearby empty building, where he left them.
When law enforcement arrived at the scene, the man was in a considerable state of alcohol intoxication.
A criminal case was initiated under the Criminal Law provision that prescribes liability for cruel treatment of an animal resulting in its death. Such a violation carries a penalty of up to five years' imprisonment, or alternatively probation or short-term imprisonment. The court may also prohibit the keeping of any type of domestic animal for a period of up to five years.
On 6 July 2026, proceedings were completed and the materials were handed over to the prosecutor's office for further review.
