On Sunday, a man born in 1991 was found dead in a private home in Baložos, Ķekavas Municipality. His body showed signs indicating a violent death. The State Police launched an investigation.
On the same day, operational staff detained a man born in 1984 who had previously not been known to law enforcement. Initial investigation established that both men had consumed alcohol. A dispute arose between them which escalated into physical confrontation. The older man attacked the younger man several times, resulting in the victim's death at the scene.
Police requested that the suspect be remanded in custody; however, Riga District Court rejected this request. Instead, the man was imposed restrictions that do not involve deprivation of liberty.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated under the Criminal Law provision on murder. Such an offence may be punished with life imprisonment or deprivation of liberty from 5 to 20 years, as well as probation supervision of up to three years.
The investigation continues, with expert examinations being conducted and all circumstances of the incident being clarified.
