Two men have been detained in Rēzekne on suspicion of deliberately setting fire to a Kia Sportage vehicle. Material damages inflicted amount to approximately 30,000 euros.

On the evening of 1 July, a light vehicle Kia Sportage caught fire in a car park in Rēzekne. Officers from the State Police's Latgale Region Administration, North Latgale District, attended the scene and launched an investigation.

As a result of the fire, the vehicle owner suffered losses of approximately 30,000 euros. Investigators believe that the fire was deliberately set.

During investigative measures and operational activities, law enforcement officers identified individuals who may have committed this crime. Last week, on 6 July, two men were detained in Rēzekne – one born in 1981 and the other in 1983. Both had previous contact with police.

The investigation is continuing and the motive for this action is being established. A criminal case has been opened under Part 2 of Article 185 of the Criminal Law on deliberate destruction of another person's property by fire or in another generally dangerous manner. This offence carries a sentence of imprisonment of up to ten years.
