During the night of 22–23 June in Sakstagala parish in Rēzekne district, a young man entered the yard of a private residence and drove away an Audi parked there. The State Police were notified of the incident, and officers immediately began searching for the missing vehicle.
Just before half past midnight, police officers spotted the wanted car in Ciskādi village, heading towards Ozolmuiža parish. Emergency lights and sirens were activated, and the driver was ordered to stop, but he refused. The man continued to drive away, exceeding the speed limit.
After a brief pursuit, law enforcement managed to stop the fleeing vehicle. It turned out that the driver was a young man born in 2009. He had previously been recorded driving under the influence.
A criminal case has been opened against the detained person for multiple offences. Under Article 175, Section 3 of the Criminal Law, he is charged with theft committed by breaking into a motor vehicle. This offence can result in imprisonment of up to five years, probation, community service, or a fine.
Additionally, proceedings have been initiated under Article 259.1 of the Criminal Law for violation of road traffic regulations by failing to comply with law enforcement's order to stop, as well as under Article 312, Section 2 for evading punishment. These offences carry penalties of imprisonment up to one year or other sanctions.
The detained person has not officially been found guilty — only a court can do so in accordance with the procedure established by law.
