On 19 June, a 69-year-old Russian journalist Grigory Nekhoroshev was found dead in Riga. The State Police have launched a criminal investigation to clarify the circumstances of his death, although initial information does not allow for claims that a crime has occurred.
Nekhoroshev had lived in exile in Latvia for the past eleven years. He was known as the first person to publicly disclose information about Russian President Vladimir Putin's relationship with former gymnast Alina Kabaeva. In 2008, the newspaper "Moskovskij Korrespondent", which he led, published reports about Putin's alleged planned divorce from his then-wife Lyudmila.
According to the account of people close to him, the journalist had feared during his lifetime that he could be targeted by contract killers acting on the Kremlin's orders. However, his friend Igor Vatolins, who met Nekhoroshev shortly before his death, stated that the deceased felt well and was actively preparing for the future.
State Police representatives confirmed to the LETA agency that in mid-June the body of a man was discovered in the capital and a case file was opened. The investigation is still ongoing, so more detailed information is not being disclosed at present.
