A man in Riga became a victim of fraud when he trusted a person posing as a police officer. Under the influence of this individual, he purchased gold coins for 21,654 euros and handed them over to the scammers.
The State Police have reported on this incident, which is one of the most significant fraud cases in the Latvian capital in recent times.
This type of scam, in which criminals impersonate law enforcement officers, has become an increasingly common occurrence. Scammers typically contact victims by telephone, claiming that money needs to be protected from other criminals or that an investigation is underway. Victims are advised to purchase gold coins or precious metals and hand them over to a "police officer", who is actually a scammer.
Police repeatedly urge residents to be vigilant and never entrust money or valuables to individuals who contact them by telephone and claim to be law enforcement officers. Real police officers never ask for money to be transferred or valuables to be handed over.
