A criminal investigation into the shooting of a woman in the Riga suburbs has been taken over by a new investigative body — the Military Police, as the incident is connected to the proximity of a military facility.

In March, the injured woman sought medical treatment for a gunshot wound to her back. She initially went to Pauls Stradiņš Hospital, where doctors determined that the nature of the injury was not life-threatening and referred the patient for observation by a family doctor. However, surgery was later performed at Eastern Hospital, where a bullet fragment approximately two centimetres long was removed.

The Health Inspectorate examined whether medical practitioners acted correctly in discharging the woman with a bullet fragment in her body. As a result of the inspection, it was established that the doctors' decision complied with professional practice regarding the removal of foreign objects, according to Jauns.lv.

The State Police are currently no longer conducting an investigation in this matter. State Police representatives have indicated that questions should be directed to the National Armed Forces.

The Armed Forces have confirmed that they received materials from the police and handed them over to the Military Police. Investigators must establish whether the shot was fired from a military service weapon.

The incident location is situated near a facility where tactical exercises took place on 4 March in the afternoon. At this address — 63 Dzintara Street — the Special Operations Command is stationed. Armed Forces representatives stress that the exercises took place inside the facility, not outside it, and therefore the investigation must be comprehensive.

The investigation is currently proceeding under the direction of the Military Police.
