The Criminal Cases Department of the Senate of the Supreme Court has taken a decision to annul the Riga Regional Court ruling in which all defendants were acquitted in the so-called second Digital Television criminal case. This information was provided by Latvia Television.
After examining the cassation complaint filed by the Prosecution, judges of the highest instance decided that the lower court's decision was unfounded and the case requires a new hearing.
Among the individuals accused in this case are Riga City Council Deputy Ainārs Šlesers (Latvia First) and former Latvian Prime Minister Andris Šķēle. Both politicians, as well as the other defendants, had previously received acquittal rulings from the regional court.
The Digital Television case is one of the most notable criminal proceedings in Latvia's recent history, in which financial violations and possible unlawful use of state funds in connection with the introduction of digital television were investigated.
The case will now be heard again in court, and the proceedings will start anew. The defendants will have to appear before judges once more to defend their innocence.
