Senate quashes acquittal verdict in so-called "Digital Television" case
The Criminal Cases Department of the Supreme Court's Senate has quashed a Riga Regional Court verdict that acquitted all defendants in the second "Digital Television" criminal case. The case involves Riga City Council member Ainārs Šlesers and former Prime Minister Andris Šķēle.
Senate quashes acquittal verdict in so-called "Digital Television" case
The Criminal Cases Department of the Supreme Court's Senate, having reviewed the prosecutor's appeal, has quashed a Riga Regional Court verdict that acquitted all defendants in the so-called second "Digital Television" criminal case. The case will now be reconsidered in court.
The lower court had found that the charges were not proven and released several persons from criminal liability. Among them is Riga City Council member Ainārs Šlesers (party "Latvia First") and former Prime Minister Andris Šķēle.
The prosecutor appealed this decision, and the Senate concluded that the Regional Court verdict should be quashed. As a result, the case will return to court for a new hearing.
The "Digital Television" case is one of the most well-known corruption and financial crime trials in Latvia's recent history. Its outcome affects high-level politicians and businessmen.
