A woman in Liepāja has lost 1,850 euros after trusting a fraudster she found on the social network TikTok who posed as a psychic. Although the bank attempted to intervene and cancel the transaction, the victim nevertheless found a way to transfer the money to the fraudster.

The State Police have opened a criminal case into the incident, police announced on 8 May.

This case reflects an increasingly widespread trend in which criminals use social networks to seek out victims and pose as individuals with supernatural abilities. Fraudsters frequently promise to resolve a person's problems or restore lost love, if only the victim pays a certain sum of money.

Bank intervention is one of the mechanisms developed to protect clients from fraud, but in this case the woman was convinced by the fraudster's story and found an alternative way to transfer the funds.
