In March in Riga, in the Rītabullī area, a woman sustained a gunshot wound to her back. The State Police (VP) initiated criminal proceedings regarding the incident, according to Jauns.lv.
The injured woman stated that the shot was fired by an unknown person. A two-centimetre bullet was removed externally by doctors at Austrumu Hospital. Previously, the woman had sought assistance at Stradiņš Hospital, but she was not operated on there — doctors determined that her condition was not life-threatening and recommended treatment with a family doctor.
The Health Inspectorate inspected whether the medical professionals acted correctly in discharging the patient with a bullet in her body. Latvian Radio reported that the inspection has concluded and the assessment is positive — the staff acted in accordance with current standards for foreign object removal.
The State Police have now announced that this case is no longer with the police, and questions should be directed to the National Armed Forces (NBS).
The NBS confirmed that the VP handed the materials over to the Military Police. It will be investigated whether the shot came from an army service weapon.
The incident location is adjacent to a military base where exercises took place on 4 March in the afternoon. It is known that the Special Operations Command is located at 63 Dzintara Street. The NBS stressed that the training took place inside the facility, not outside, so a thorough investigation is necessary.
