Vandals steal and damage monuments in Vidzeme cemeteries
Police in the Vidzeme region have documented several cases of cemetery theft and damage. Reports of the incidents have been received from several districts — Limbaži, Madona, Gulbene and Alūksne areas.
Criminals have removed metal memorial plaques, letters and decorative elements from grave monuments. In some places, vandals have also damaged the monuments themselves in order to reach coloured metal parts, including bronze elements.
The investigating authorities have initiated criminal proceedings in connection with these facts and are continuing their work to clarify the circumstances.
The law-enforcement agency is calling on members of the public to visit the resting places of relatives and check whether any damage has been caused. If residents have noticed damage or suspicious activity in cemeteries, they are asked to report it by calling 112 or by contacting the nearest police officer.
Any information about suspicious persons or vehicles recently spotted near cemeteries would also be helpful.
Officials emphasise that such conduct is not only material damage but also a serious affront to the memory of the deceased and their families.
