A judge at the Marrakech court of first instance imposed a one-year custodial sentence without suspension on Monday on an online user aged 30 holding both French and Algerian passports. The conviction is accompanied by a financial penalty of approximately 190 euros. The accused, who goes by the name "Yass Naubelle" on digital platforms, faced several charges, including making insulting remarks against a public institution and spreading false allegations intended to harm the reputation of others.
The young woman's legal troubles began after she uploaded a video clip in which she claimed that national police officers arrested "young girls for no reason" and demanded bribes at roadside checkpoints. She had also criticised Marrakech motorists, deeming their driving behaviour "reckless" and preferring that of Algiers drivers.
Security services apprehended her on 13 June at the terminal of the ochre city's airport, as she was about to board a flight bound for France. She was remanded in custody pending trial. The court has given her the possibility of filing an appeal before a higher court within ten days following the verdict.
On the TikTok network, the defendant has a following of some 20,000 people. The case was first revealed by the local press and subsequently covered by Le Figaro.
