On 22 June 2026, a magistrate at the Marrakech court handed down a sentence of twelve months' imprisonment against a young woman of dual nationality. In addition to this custodial sentence, the judge imposed a financial penalty of two thousand dirhams as well as an order to pay court costs.
The defendant, whose identity is reduced to the letters O.Y., had to answer to two counts of indictment. On one hand, she was accused of having made insulting remarks against a legally established institution. On the other hand, she was accused of spreading false allegations intended to harm the honour of third parties.
It all began with a clip filmed and then posted on social media. In these images, the defendant criticised the driving habits observed in the ochre city. She drew a parallel with the road practices of her country of origin, favouring the latter.
But it was above all her denunciation of police practices that led to this internet user being brought to justice. She claimed that certain officers took advantage of traffic stops to extort money from motorists, sums which they then diverted to their personal gain.
On 13 June, security services at Marrakech airport had apprehended her as she was about to board a flight. She had then been held in custody until her appearance before the court. Active on digital platforms under the name Y.N., she can now contest this judgment on appeal.
