The Aïn Sebaâ court has granted provisional release to rapper Mehdi Black Wind this Friday. His trial for "contempt of a constitutional institution" has been adjourned to 2 October 2026.
Provisional release for Mehdi Black Wind after three weeks in detention
The Aïn Sebaâ criminal court ordered on Friday 31 July the immediate release of rapper El Mahdi Lyoubi, known by the stage name Mehdi Black Wind, according to medias24.com. The hearing of the case has been adjourned to 2 October 2026.
The ruling orders his "immediate release, unless he is detained for another reason", according to the terms of the judgement. This measure comes nine days after the rejection of an initial request for provisional release at the hearing on 22 July.
The rapper is being prosecuted for "contempt of a constitutional institution". His support committee links this prosecution to the content of a song critical of those in power. The specific remarks held against him have not been made public.
Mehdi Black Wind had been taken into custody on 13 July at the headquarters of the National Judicial Police Brigade. He was subsequently referred to the public prosecutor and then the Casablanca criminal court on 15 July, before being held in detention pending his trial. He remains prohibited from leaving the country.
