Tangier: 25-year-old repeat offender arrested for assault and mobile phone theft in Beni Makada
On the morning of Friday 3 July, law enforcement in Tangier apprehended a 25-year-old man who had previously appeared before the courts on several occasions. His arrest came after a recorded sequence showing him committing an assault was widely shared online. The footage shows the individual striking a young woman who was waiting near a workers' bus stop in the Beni Makada neighbourhood, then seizing her mobile device.
Security officers had identified this video well before any complaint was filed. The absence of an initial report from the victim or witnesses did not prevent investigators from taking action: the viral nature of the content enabled them to establish the suspect's identity and locate him.
When arrested, the man showed clear signs of drug use, in an advanced state of intoxication.
Officers subsequently contacted the assaulted young woman to take her statement. This approach made it possible to build a solid legal case based on facts initially revealed through digital surveillance, rather than through a standard report.
The defendant was remanded in police custody under the supervision of the public prosecutor. The objective is now to shed full light on this matter, to establish the degree of criminal liability of the person in question for the violence suffered by the victim, as well as for the theft of her telephone.
