Malta Police seized 166 kilogrammes of cocaine, 2,088 ecstasy pills and 19 kilogrammes of khat during the first six months of 2026, according to figures released by the government.
Interior and Security Minister Glenn Bedingfield presented the data during a workshop organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to commemorate the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The number of ecstasy pills seized so far this year has already exceeded the total collected throughout the whole of 2025, whilst the quantity of khat intercepted has reached that of the previous year.
Bedingfield praised the Police Force, particularly the Drug Squad, for its work in dismantling organised criminal networks and reducing illegal narcotics reaching Maltese roads. He noted that the strategic position of the Mediterranean attracts international drug traffickers, and therefore cooperation across borders through information sharing and joint operations is essential.
The minister added that the fight against drug-related crime requires more than enforcement alone, and emphasised that prevention, education, treatment and rehabilitation should remain at the heart of Malta's national strategy, particularly to protect young people from substance abuse.
He reaffirmed Malta's commitment to working with the UNODC, European bodies and neighbouring states to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking and organised crime in the Mediterranean.
