The start of Yorgen Fenech's trial for the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia has once again placed Malta under international scrutiny, with British newspaper The Guardian publishing extensive coverage of the proceedings.
The British publication opened with prosecutors' account that one of Malta's most prominent businessmen paid €150,000 for Caruana Galizia to be killed, whilst providing details about the version of the accusation presented to the jury on the day of the trial's opening.
The report also emphasised the years of delays that led to the trial, noting that Fenech was arrested in 2019 before bail was granted this year after the legal period for his detention expired.
Outside the courtroom, The Guardian described the exceptional measures required by this case, including the jury selection process that lasted five hours and the decision that the jury would be sequestered in a hotel room without access to mobile phones, computers or smart watches for the duration of the trial.
The publication revisited the work of Caruana Galizia as one of Malta's most prominent investigative journalists, whose reporting on powerful political and business figures made her a target before she was killed in a car bomb attack in October 2017.
