A digital device was found in the cell of Adrian Agius, known as 'Ta' Maksar', following a routine search in prison. The security seals on the laptop were broken.
According to Lovin Malta, which cited a Times of Malta report, the laptop was discovered during a search carried out last week. Agius had been permitted to keep the device for educational reasons, but prison rules state that all ports must be closed and prisoners must not have access to the internet.
Sources said that one of the laptop's ports was open after the seals were broken.
The authorities are investigating whether the damage was intentional or not. There is suspicion that the device may have been used for someone to access the internet or communicate with people outside, but this has not yet been confirmed.
As a precautionary measure, Agius was transferred to Division 6, the prison zone with the highest level of security. Specialists are examining the laptop and the investigation is ongoing.
A prison spokesperson confirmed that a digital device was used in a way that breached regulations, and that immediate steps were taken.
Agius was given a life sentence in June 2025 after being found guilty of the murder of lawyer Carmel Chircop.
