Maltese Court Grants Carlos Pace Bail
Magistrate Lara Lanfranco approved a bail application for Carlos Pace with significant financial guarantees. In the case of his brother Cleavon, the court reduced the amount of the required deposit.
Maltese Court Grants Carlos Pace Bail
A court on the island has granted Carlos Pace release from custody after his application for provisional freedom was accepted. The judge, Magistrate Lara Lanfranco, ordered him to pay €15,000 as a deposit and provide personal surety of €35,000. This came after a previous appeal for the same reason had been rejected just ten days earlier.
At the same hearing, the judge decided to reduce the required deposit for Carlos's brother, Cleavon, from €15,000 to €10,000. Cleavon had already been granted permission to leave custody in early July, and his lawyers argued that he was unable to meet the original payment.
The defence presented arguments that both brothers had already spent long periods in detention. They produced documentation showing that they had been offered future employment, and an external guarantor's pledge was also provided.
The two brothers face criminal proceedings for the alleged theft of drugs from national military establishments in an incident that occurred in 2025. They are also accused of breaching conditions imposed by previous provisional release sentences. The proceedings also include allegations of serious financial crimes against others from the same family, such as money laundering, loan sharking practices, and recidivism.
At the same sitting, the application for provisional freedom by Maria Grixti, who is connected to Keith Pace, was rejected. Grixti remains in custody.
The case is being prosecuted by Inspector Lianne Bonello, with the assistance of lawyers Neville Galea and Michael Muscat acting on behalf of the Attorney General. Several other lawyers, including Franco Debono, Marion Camilleri, and Adreana Zammit, are defending the accused.
